Hickses in Early Georgia

Tax Digests

published by the Georgia Department of Archives & History, 1926

These are just some Hicks folks listed in the early tax digests of Georgia. I have no idea if they are any relation or not, but since my ggg-gf Ellis Hicks and his assumed sister Elizabeth Hicks Wiley both say they were born in Georgia, I have to check it out.

Counties included in this book were Camden (1794, 1809) Chatham (1806), Glynn (1790, 1794), Hancock (1812), Lincoln (1818), Montgomery (1797-98, 1805-1806) Pulaski (1818), Richmond (1818), Warren (1794, 1805, 1818), Wilkes (1792, 1793, 1794)

According to the author, "Other" events include: advertisements, tax lists, grand jury findings, notices of administration, executor's sales, local news items, deaths, marriages and many other types of events. Also, microfilm copies of the newspapers are supposed to be available for purchase from University of Georgia Libraries, GA Newspaper Project, Athens, GA 30602. The author notes that several libraries in GA have copies of these early papers also. From April 11, 1789 through April 1806, the paper was officially titled "The Augusta Chronicle and Gazette of the State"
