Marvin Hicks of Near Gila Died Friday Following an Operation
"Marvin Hicks, a well known Grove township farmer, died Friday
following an operation for the removal of a brain tumor at Barnes hospital, St. Louis. Death was due to loss
of blood. The tumor had formed about a brain artery and when it was removed the doctors were unable to stop
the bleeding. Mr. Hicks had been ill for two years and had been gradually losing the sight of one eye as
the tumor grew in size." Paraphrased

Marvin Albert Hicks, oldest son of Owen and Laura Hicks,
was born December 27, 1897 near Gila and died Friday, October 9, 1936 at the age of 38 years at Barnes hospital,
St. Louis He was operated on for a brain tumor and had been in failing health for two years. Survivors
are Doshia Hicks of Gila, Mrs. Fred (Pearl) Hensley of Arcola, Mrs. Albert (Marie) Kugler of Mattoon and Roscoe
Hicks of Belleflower.
He lived with his sister, Doshia Hicks on the farm where he was born and was a devoted brother and good neighbor.
Funeral services were held at Kern chapel Sunday afternoon and he was buried in the nearby cemetery. Rev.
L.W. Godert, pastor, officiated.
