Hicks Genealogy

The Family of
Ellis Hicks

My ggg-grandfather Ellis Hicks first appears in Kanawha County, WV, appearing on the property tax list in 1818. Subsequently, he appears on the lists of 1819 and 1820. He is also in Kanawha for the 1820 census. In 1821, he is not listed on the Kanawha property tax list. Ellis and at least one of his supposed sisters (Elizabeth) and his brother-in-law John Story head to Bracken County, KY. I pick him up in the 1824 property tax records for Bracken where he is the only male over the age of 21. His son Hugh Hicks is listed on his own in 1838. His sister Elizabeth (who also claimed to be born in Georgia) married Reason Wiley in Bracken County and they then headed off to Coles County, IL. Ellis and his family follow to Coles in 1842. His brother-in-law John Story remained in Bracken County. John and Ellis had some land dealings together in Bracken. In June of 1850, Ellis bought what would be the family homestead in what would become Grove Township, Jasper County, IL.  Both he and his wife Mary Story, and probably their son Hugh, died in 1866, possibly during a cholera epidemic? Unfortunately, his name is all but forgotten in today's Jasper County.

Probable Parents of Ellis Hicks:

William HICKS b: Bef. 1765 d: 1812-1814 in West Virginia?
+Hannah GARRAD b: Bef. 1765 d: 1830-1840 in West Virginia?

m: 18 June 1783 in Greenbrier Baptist Church in Greenbrier County, WV

"Garrad" is also spelled as Jarrett, Jarat, Garrett, Garad, Garred - take your pick! Various histories of the time say the family were French Hugenouts.

New! North Carolina connection?????? In the 1880 census, Elizabeth Hicks Wiley says her parents were both born in North Carolina. If true, this would effectively eliminate the possibility of William and Hannah Hicks as being her parents. Of course, the 1870 census and 1880 census also says Elizabeth's birthplace was Kentucky - not Georgia as she originally claimed on the 1850 census.

Suspected Siblings of Ellis Hicks (not proven) (and of course, not valid if Ellis's parents turn out to be from North Carolina as indicated in the 1880 census listing for Elizabeth Hicks Wiley):

According to the 1810 Census, I need to account for 3 males age 16-26 (including David who has his own household and who's death certificate says he is William and Hannah's son), 3 males 10-16 and 1 male 0-10 years old. 1 female 0-10 and 1 female 10-16 years old.

Possible candidates for the last son:

Squire Hicks, Joseph Hicks

(Elijah Hicks who was married in Bracken County in 1823 has been claimed by an Ohio Hicks researcher who says Elijah is not of the WV Hickses.)

Daughters: I include Mary Hicks based solely on the fact that she was in Bracken County, KY at the same time as Ellis Hicks and married there in the 1820's. I'm aware that it's flimsy evidence - it's called a "working theory" :-)
